How Were They Named?

Everyday we run into uncountable terms and phrases, that sound exceptionally ordinary to us, be they name of the movies, monuments, terms or phrases. But, do we ever stop and wonder, how did these things, entities or the movies derive their names? While many of the names have regular "named after" stories associated with them, there are some which enjoy very innovative naming history to their credit.

1) APPLE
Apple is an American multinational technology company, that doesn't require an introduction, whether you're technofreak or not. Its products such as the Mac, the iPod, the iPhone, the iPad, etc have been reigning the markets, as well as our hearts, since their launches. But, do you know this company, which was founded by the terrific trio of Steve Jobs, Ronald Wayne and Steve Wozniak, procured its name from the apple diet of the Steve Jobs. In his biography, that featured in 2011, Jobs told Walter Isaacson that he was “on one of his fruitarian diets” and had just come back from an apple farm, and thought the name sounded “fun, spirited and not intimidating."
Well, an apple a day, got Jobs his way !

2) JAMES BOND
We all have been vastly galvanized by this one character, clad in the debonair suits, brandishing his hitech handguns, and ferociously slaying his foes. But do you know, our favourite character's name has been inspired by an ornithologist who
generously consented Ian Fleming, to make our spy, his namesake. Now we know, who "Bond! James Bond!" actually is.

3) OSCAR AWARDS
The dream gong of each artist belonging to the Film Fraternity, Oscar awards are undoubtedly the most prestigious achievement anyone can have. But, the etymology of its name, is as exhilarating as the award itself.
According to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, an Academy librarian and eventual executive director, Margaret Herrick, thought that the design of the statue closely resembles her Uncle Oscar, and eventually the whole staff began referring it to as Oscar.
Margaret surely had a handsome Uncle!

4) HIGGS BOSON
Marking the revolutionary discovery in the field of physics, the Higgs Boson is a particle that gives mass to other particles. It won't be wrong to quote, that the Higgs Boson is the most sought-after discovery in the history of mankind, as its the most expensive particle of all time.
But, do you know, this God Particle has been named by merging the names of two brilliant scientists, namely, "Peter Higgins" and "Satyendra Nath Bose", to acknowledge their contribution in the same.
Ain't that one the biggest honors, one can ever achieve?

5) SHERLOCK HOLMES
We all have been an intense addict of this one spellbinding detective series, be it the paperback version or the on-air telecast. But, very less people must be acquainted with the fact, that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, originally decided to name his character as Sherrinford. But the name was altered to Sherlock, possibly because of a cricketer who bore the name. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who created Holmes (of course), was a fan of cricket and the name ‘Sherlock’ appears to have stuck in his memory.
Sherringford Holmes!

Happy Reading :)
